The categorical stupidity of the Epstein conspiracy is hilarious and otherwise rational people positing conspiracies about murder are failing Occam's razor so spectacularly it's starting to make me a fucking determinist. I haven't spent much time in prisons, but I've put a lot of people in prison, and I've spent many hundreds of hours in jails.
1. First of all, cells in prison don't have cameras in the cell proper. Cells aren't big enough to mount them in a place where they won't get destroyed, and because most convicts are almost all categorically knuckle dragging sociopaths with addiction and mental health issues, they will be destroyed and turned into knives and other shit. There's no way the prison is going to underwrite that type of expense with build in maintenance.
2. What do people think 'suicide watch' actually means? That there's three psychologists sitting outside a Hannibal Lecter glass wall cell, taking notes, murmuring thoughtfully, while the suicidal person sits there in a straight jacket on a padded floor 24/7? No. If someone seriously has tried to kill themselves, they MIGHT be put in a drunk- tank type cell with a suicide tunic. It's about putting the person in a position where they have no physical options to self-harm. "Oh, but why was he taken OFF suicide watch?" the chorus murmurs, immune to the practical reality of actually putting people in cages for extended periods of time. First of all, people say they're suicidal in jail all the fucking time (usually it's bullshit. they might be suicidal but 99% of the time they don't have the balls to follow through). Are you going to put all of them on suicide watch, basically in solitary, as soon as they say anything? DUNNO HOW THAT COULD BE ABUSED. If so, for how long? Most 1st world countries have some kind of clause about cruel and unusual punishment. Even a moderately conscientious warden will squirm at the inquest:
Attorney: Warden Cummings, when my client attempted to smash his brains out on the wall of his Suicide Watch cell, sustaining a concussion and large laceration, how long had he been in that cell?
Warden: 34 days.
Attorney: Was he alone?
Warden: Yes
A: Was there anything in the cell?
W: A toilet and sink, and a mat on the floor
A: So he was basically in solitary confinement
W: Uh, well, they're different protocols
A: Different how?
W: In solitary the prisoner has bed and blankets.
A: I see. So, once my client was placed in this cell which provided him less freedom than *checks notes*...solitary confinement, why was he there for so long?
W: Well, he had tried to hang himself from his bedpost
A: So is 34 days a fixed amount of time? Once a suicide is attempted, you are placed on Suicide Watch for 34 days?
W: No, mostly it depends on the prisoner's mindstate.
A: My client told me that after 2 days, he had come down from the drugs he was using, he was no longer suicidal, and told you and your staff that.
W: I received a report like that, yes
A: So why did he remain there?
W: He continued to yell and scream
A: Do people in other parts of the jail yell and scream?
W: *looking very uncomfortable*
3. It's not practicable to monitor people 24/7, and the type of protocols in place for people who are prone to serious self-harm are generally not sustained unless the person is pants-on-head crazy, then the only solution is heavy medication. Obviously, I'm spitballing here, but I'll wager the conversation went something like this:
Prison Staff: Hey Jeff, how you doing today
Epstien: Tired and sore, mostly. The ground is pretty hard.
PS: That was pretty dramatic the other day.
E: Yeah
PS: Are you still feeling like hurting yourself?
E: No. I'd just like to go back to my cell
PS: Are you sure
E: Yeah, just in a dark place at the time. I've thought things over and I'm feeling a lot better.
And the prison will gradually or otherwise extend regular privileges back to Epstien on account of they don't want to appear to impinge on his human rights, because God Forbid, if he misses a meal or something, the ACLU will be up their ass. What are they going to do? They have to take the prisoner somewhere at his word, especially if he appears lucid.
4. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. This guy is a billionaire who is in prison for child sex offences. Folks have to understand that the Average Joe, otherwise normie, 40 hour a week guy, can be driven to suicide in the face of the criminal justice system. I know a guy who killed himself because he lost his licence on an impaired. No licence, now he loses his job, he's failed his family, etc. Now try to take that shame and ignominy, and magnify it by several orders of magnitude. Epstien was a major player, and now he's caught in a current he wasn't built to swim, totally ruined, and ...
5. He's in prison for *CHILD SEX OFFENCES*. He's not thinking about anything beyond getting though the day without sustaining a traumatic brain injury or multiple perforations in his abomen or anus. You think he gives a shit about *squints at the terrible comments on Twitter* the fucking Clintons??? Or Trump? He's not in that world, anymore. Or this one.
